Yoga mat marketing tends to present one material as simply better than the others. It is not that clean. Each of the three common materials is genuinely good at some things and genuinely bad at others, and the right choice depends on how you sweat, where you practise and how long you want the mat to last.
PVC: the cheap default
PVC is what most budget mats are made of, and it is not without merit. It is durable, it holds up to years of use, and it is the least expensive option by a wide margin.
The problems are real, though. PVC is a plastic that does not biodegrade, so the mat outlives you in a landfill. New PVC mats carry a distinct chemical smell that can take weeks to fade. And critically for Indian practice: PVC gets more slippery as it gets wet. If you sweat, a PVC mat becomes less safe exactly when you need grip most.
TPE: the middle ground
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) was developed as the answer to PVC's environmental problems. It is recyclable, free of PVC and latex, lighter than PVC, and has almost no odour out of the packaging.
Its weakness is durability. TPE is softer, which makes it comfortable, but it also means knees and elbows leave permanent dents in high-use spots over time. Expect a good TPE mat to last a few years of regular practice rather than a decade.
TPE also makes an excellent base layer. A cork top surface bonded to a TPE base gets cork's grip with TPE's cushioning and non-slip floor contact — which is how most quality cork mats, including ours, are actually built.
Cork: grip that improves when wet
Cork is the outlier, and the reason is genuinely interesting. Cork's surface contains suberin, a waxy substance that becomes slightly tackier in the presence of moisture. So where PVC turns into a slip hazard when you sweat, cork grips harder.
For hot yoga, vinyasa in an Indian summer, or anyone who simply sweats a lot, this is not a marketing detail — it is the single biggest practical difference between these materials.
Cork is also naturally antimicrobial, which means it resists the bacterial smell that builds up in foam mats, and it is harvested from bark without felling the tree.
The downsides: cork is heavier, it costs more, and the surface feels firmer and more textured than foam. Some people love that feedback; others find it harsh on bare knees. If you have sensitive knees, plan on a folded towel or a knee pad for kneeling postures.

Choosing by practice type
- Hot yoga, power vinyasa, or you sweat heavily — cork, without much debate. Wet grip is the whole argument.
- Restorative, yin, gentle hatha — TPE. You want cushioning for long-held floor postures, and you are not testing grip.
- Occasional practice, tight budget — PVC is honestly fine. Air it out for a fortnight before first use.
- Travel — TPE for weight, or a thin foldable cork travel mat if grip matters more than bulk.
The one myth worth correcting
Thicker does not mean better. A 10 mm mat feels luxurious in child's pose and actively works against you in tree pose, because the surface compresses unevenly under a single foot. For general practice 4-6 mm is the sweet spot. Go thicker only if you have a specific joint reason to.
